TRAIL DESCRIPTIONS

The trails of Friedrich Wilderness Park offer a wide range of hiking experiences and levels of challenge from Level One handicap accessible to Level Four difficulty. Plants of interest are marked with low wooden markers corresponding to the plants listed on the TRAIL MARKER GUIDE.

Forest Range

Forest Range IconFOREST RANGE TRAIL - An easy series of three short paved loops for 1/8 of a mile of touring through woodlands and grasslands. This entire trail complex is Level One Access.

Mail Loop Icon

MAIN LOOP TRAIL - About 1.5 miles of trails through diverse habitats, climbing 350 feet in elevation to the tops of the hills. All trails, except Forest Range, are accessed from the Main Loop. Lower portions are relatively level and rated Level Three Access. The ascents of the hill are steep and rated Level Four Access.

WATER TRAIL - 1/3 mile of easy, but somewhat rough trail, highlighted by one of the oldest working windmills in Bexar County, an intermittent creek and large, wet season spring. The north leg to the windmill is rated Level Three Access. The remainder of the trail is rated Level Four Access.

JUNIPER BARRENS TRAIL - About 3/4 of a mile of easy trail through scrubby woodlands dominated by juniper with small pockets of grasslands. The upper portion is level and rated Level Three Access. The lower portion is rolling, with short rock ledges and rated Level Four Access.

VISTA LOOP TRAIL - One mile of easy to rugged rail beginning at the top of the hill, dropping 350 feet to a north facing system of canyons and climbing back to the top of the hill. Much of the trail follows narrow rock ledges along the edges of the canyons. This trail passes through deciduous woodlands dominated by Lacey oak with Spanish oak, cherry and walnut also present. This trail is rated Level Four Access.

upland rangeUPLAND RANGE TRAIL - A short, 1/10 mile, level trail connecting the Main Loop with the Vista Loop. This trail passes through a nice stand of Texas persimmons and cedar elms. Rated Level Four Access.

Fern Del

Fern Del IconFERN DEL TRAIL - About 1/4 mile of rugged, yet delicate trail starting at the bottom of a north facing canyon, climbing about 200 feet to near the top of the canyon and back down. The same environments and trail conditions as on the Vista Loop Trail are found here. This trail is rated Level Four Access.
